What is a Responsive Website?

To put it simply, a responsive website is one that has been designed and built to achieve an optimal viewing experience across a wide range of devices, from mobile phones and tablets to laptops and desktop monitors. A responsive website design always displays in a usable and readable way, ensuring a seamless performance, regardless of device.

Responsive web design is recommended by Google because responsive sites have one URL and the same HTML, regardless of device, making it easier and more efficient for Google to crawl, index, and organize content. A responsive design allows one website to provide a great user-experience across many devices and screen sizes and because of the large emphasis Google is now placing on user-experience as a ranking factor, this is essential to take into account with regards to Search Engine Optimization.

OTC incorporates responsive design into all new website developments we undertake as a standard inclusion. If you have an older site that isn’t responsive, our recommendation would be to start budgeting for developing a new site sometime in the near future. However we are also able to design mobile site versions to sit alongside your existing site as an alternative solution.

Day by day, the number of devices, platforms and browsers that need to work with your site grows. Responsive web design represents a fundamental shift in how we'll build websites for the decade to come.
